Plan your hikes carefully, carry maps, and research the area you plan to hike. Let someone know where you are going, and how long you plan to be gone. If, despite taking these steps, you become lost, follow some simple guidelines to stay safe.

Find a safe place to stop. Moving farther from wherever you were when you became aware of your predicament is not going to help if you do not know where you are going. It’s natural to be afraid, but it is imperative that you calm yourself. Sit down, take off your pack and relax. Breathe deeply and slowly. Think carefully. Consult your maps and any notes you took on the area.

If you are able to figure out where you are, for certain, make your way carefully to the nearest trail. If, however, you still do not know where you are, stay put. Consider your options for shelter and water in case it takes someone a long time to find you. Remember, you probably realized you were lost before you had traveled far from your intended route, and a good hiker always lets someone know where they will be. Wandering around trying to find your way back is likely to make a search more difficult.
